Day 1 Post Surgery

I've been a little busy, so I apologize that I haven't kept up with this blog during the surgery. Maybe I will get my dad or Otto to post some pics - they're the ones taking them this time.

Here's a copy of what I just e-mailed:

I just arrived back at the hotel. It's my night to sleep. =) Daddy is staying with Diana tonight.

We had a "half" night - awake more than asleep. We might have gotten a few hours all together. Between nurses checking vitals and Diana having a few problems, it was a mostly sleepless night. She awoke early with a tummy ache, and shortly lost all the dinner she had so voraciously devoured. I'll spare you the lovely details and just say - "in a cast - not fun"! =)

Later I awoke and heard her rustling around and breathing fast, so I sat up and she told me she was having quite a bit of pain. The nurse gave her morphine through the IV, which seemed to do the trick. That was really the only time before or since that she's had pain, praise God!!!

However, the morphine (and everything else filtering through her little body, I'm sure), wasn't so great on the tummy. We spent quite a bit of time this morning trying to calm her tummy. Thankfully no more "eliminating" (as my dad would so delicately put it), but she was afraid to eat all day. If you know Diana, you know she has a very sensitive stomach, and this is little freak-out thing she does is nothing new. We did not push food on her today (managed to get two bites of applesauce and yogurt in). Thank goodness she has an IV for fluids; we'll make up the nutrition soon.
We also switched her to oral pain meds instead, so it won't bother her tummy so much anymore. Downside - it must taste really terrible!! Now she doesn't want the pain meds, and gets nauseous thinking about taking them!! ={ I explained that we have to decide which is worse - a short nasty taste or icky tummy for a long time.

She's also been running a fever today, which isn't unusual at all for bone surgery, but this evening it went up a bit more than normal. They're just keeping an eye on it at this point, as she is on meds that will bring it down, and has had a good round of antibiotics. Her little feet are swollen, but the nurses didn't seem to be concerned; supposedly from all the IV's. Her pulse and everything in her toes has been good.
The cast people came up and finished off her cast today. She now has a gorgeous pink and purple full-body cast - with a bar across the legs. ugh!!! =P No pants for this girl for a while. She is very proud of showing it off, and loves to have people sign it! Hopefully all of you can have a chance! =)

We loved having visits from Uncle Mark, Aunt Julie, Ireland and Easton! If you're in the Indy area - please feel free to stop by anytime! We're always there!

Keep praying!

Thanks,

DeAnn
