Corn Update

Well, corn season has come and gone for us, with mixed results. I neglected to give an update sooner, and I've had some people ask. After that storm that came through and knocked down most of our corn, (see post here), we left for our family camping trip. I was shocked and amazed the morning after we got home, when I looked out my window - it was almost all back up! Unfortunately, we had a lot of rain following, so a good part of it went over again. And most of it just didn't develop - bad weather for corn this summer, I'm sure. I felt like I was growing the withered ears in the pharaoh's dream!

Yet, despite all those troubles I managed to get 19 quart bags of our own corn into the freezer! That's almost half of what I wanted, and way more than I thought I would get from little nibblet ears. I had to buy the rest, but I found a good deal, so it wasn't too painful.

Speaking of freezing corn - my mom pointed out to me an awesome invention for taking the corn off. It's from Williams Sonoma, and it's called the "corn zipper":

It took a little practise to get it just right, but it really works! I made it through 4 bushels of corn with NO wrist fatigue or tendonitis flare-ups! Just watch out for the side of your thumb! =} That thing is really sharp!!
