You lose some...So, the big day has come and gone. Did I make my goal? Well, let's just say that I am happy with my results. My goal was 2 hours 24 minutes.... which I was basing off of an 11:00 minute mile. My average over the Half-Marathon was 11:05/mile or 2 hours 25 minutes and 7 seconds total.
I could be mad because, really - just 5 seconds a mile faster? However, I am ecstatic that my time wasOttohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11902027463636062690noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2693729381549736387.post-47595645321099881182013-10-30T21:43:00.001-04:002013-10-30T21:45:13.202-04:00Last post before run!Ran my last pre-race run today.I am really excited for Saturday Morning to come. Did I mention I signed up for the run like 11 months ago? It has been a long time coming.Training started late this year as I was going to be a fair weather runner. Well, it didn't take long to figure out that you either don't get you training in or you run unless it is lightning out. Even vacations are noOttohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11902027463636062690noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2693729381549736387.post-19045960556234455152013-10-26T18:29:00.001-04:002013-10-26T18:29:44.569-04:00Yehaw!Good run today.I way over dressed but it's good that I did. I didn't realize it was going to be so windy out. Thankfully I was able to half unzip my jacket to cool me off enough,I realized today when I wanted to speed up a little, I started taking deeper breaths, which mean the air went in and out faster. It's amazing how that wore out my lungs. Once I went back to normal breathing the run was Ottohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11902027463636062690noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2693729381549736387.post-15567122377876686862013-10-23T21:28:00.000-04:002013-10-23T22:58:48.126-04:00Crunch Time!Well we are about 10 days from the Indianapolis Monumental Marathon and it is crunch time.
I am running the half marathon which is around 13.1 miles.
So, here is my last-minute advice for all you beginner runners. But don't just take my word for it. Read up on it from multiple sources for yourself.
1. You want to make sure you are comfortable during your run, dress for success!
Need somethingOttohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11902027463636062690noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2693729381549736387.post-24093752555073052152013-10-20T20:48:00.001-04:002013-10-20T21:22:59.113-04:00WeirdTook a different route today for my long run and had the hardest time even running 10 miles. It's almost disheartening to think that the run is two weeks away and I just blew my last chance for a 13.1 mile run. My per mile time just kept creeping up. It seemed there was nothing I could do to get a consistent mile time. The weather was awkward as well. While it was 60 out it was a cold 60. Ottohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11902027463636062690noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2693729381549736387.post-67298011512531954792013-10-16T11:40:00.001-04:002013-10-16T11:40:47.293-04:00Do you like to run? This question was recently asked of me. At the time I said, "No". Now, I think I know how to better respond. I should have said something like, "As much as I love having a root canal done." Problem is I have bend fortunate enough not to have experienced one yet but I hear they are painful. So, I am really not sure if that is a good metaphor. So what's the God's honest truth? Most days I Ottohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11902027463636062690noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2693729381549736387.post-4560039847738248082013-10-06T19:48:00.001-04:002013-10-06T19:50:27.522-04:00So, when is it time for new shoe?I have done some research on when to replace my running shoes. There are as many different opinions as there are flavors of ice cream at baskin robins. I did, however, come across some good guidelines. One would assume that it's when the shoes wear out. That's exactly right. Knowing when your shoes are wore out is a whole new experience for running shoes though. If you've been into Ottohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11902027463636062690noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2693729381549736387.post-84328633541694655622013-09-28T19:44:00.001-04:002013-09-28T19:44:35.645-04:00Slow and steady wins the race.So today I ran... And ran... And ran. All 13.1 miles and was disappointed that my time was 9 seconds more per mile than two weeks ago. However, after reviewing my run I noticed my pace looked more like a yo-yo than the straight line runners try for.So what I've learned is that there is a reason you want even pace. That reason is simple. It is a lot less stressful on your body. Two weeks ago I Ottohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11902027463636062690noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2693729381549736387.post-37338601101481601682013-09-21T13:47:00.001-04:002013-09-21T13:47:22.488-04:00Ooops, That wasn't too bright.Yesterday we had the local blood bank have a remote blood donor drive at my place of work. I occasionally donate and it had been long enough since last time that I was able to donate again. It never occurred to me that it might affect my running. But as I was finishing up donating blood they remind me to take it easy and no strenuous activity for at least 24 hours. Ooops. The next morning (Today) IOttohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11902027463636062690noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2693729381549736387.post-66283842195268938762013-09-15T15:54:00.001-04:002013-09-15T15:54:20.783-04:00I made it!For those of you who use MapMyRun you know you can take part in different challenges. I took part in a challenge by Aetna. Aetna's challenge was over 90 days. The first 30 days you needed to log 10 workouts of 20 minutes or more. The second 30 days you needed to log 15 workouts of 20 minutes or more. The last 30 days you needed to log 20 workouts of 20 minutes or more. Well today Ottohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11902027463636062690noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2693729381549736387.post-14764853537897764632013-09-14T14:27:00.001-04:002013-09-14T19:32:38.110-04:00YES! Again I say YES!Alright. You want to know the trick to getting past 10 miles? I figured this out last year.Rule number 1: Run as far away from your house as you can. IE: If you are planning to run 13.1 Miles and walk 1 Mile after that it totals a workout of 14 miles. So pick a direction and run half of it, 7 miles. That is exactly what I did this morning and it paid off. No one likes walking more than they have Ottohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11902027463636062690noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2693729381549736387.post-61157508368429657542013-09-07T20:36:00.001-04:002013-09-07T20:36:35.919-04:00Double DigitsI finally hit double digits!I do not know what it is about 10 Miles that makes it hard to get to and even harder to get beyond. It must be a mental thing because I kept going from I can't take another step to I'm doing fine maybe I'll run all 13.1 today. Besides the mental struggle my average time for running a mile started to slip. My legs were weary and I could no longer keep up my desired Ottohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11902027463636062690noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2693729381549736387.post-34775319640230127602013-09-06T15:38:00.001-04:002013-09-06T15:38:08.071-04:00Happy Dance!Don't worry. I didn't pee my pants. Today was another great morning to run. While I was running I started thinking about the barrier that I've had a hard time overcoming. That barrier is to run a 5k in under 30 minutes. I had trained all last summer for my first half marathon and was never quite able to do it. Probably because I usually only run a short fast run one day a week and neverOttohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11902027463636062690noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2693729381549736387.post-20046613796807943012013-09-05T15:02:00.001-04:002013-09-05T15:02:03.495-04:00Cool RunningsI have been loving the weather this week. Unfortunately with the baby coming home it had been difficult for me to find time to run.Yesterday I had the pleasure of my dad helping me replace some rotting wood on my barn. Running for the rest of your life, or running to promote your own health.Well today it's about that latter. I could do it for myself. However, we made an addition to our family yesterday. Isaac Elliot was born. So I may run to promote my health but I do it for my family. This is me in the OR holding him and taking his picture. God gave us a great capacity to love. Really need to move my long runs to Saturday morning so I can acclimate slowly to the cooler temperatures. Remember the half marathon is in November and it tends to be pretty chilly at 7 am. It takes me about a mile to get warmed up.Recovery is starting to take longer. However, I am running 4.5 miles on the Ottohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11902027463636062690noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2693729381549736387.post-63983827029715366912013-08-20T22:16:00.001-04:002013-08-20T22:16:09.759-04:00It's August, it's supposed to be HOT!Run today was ok. I thought I would do better having a day off of running but as hot as it was I am not too disappointed. Trying to up my daily runs this week to 4.5 miles. I made it today... We will see about the rest of the week. I don't foresee any problems except the weather forecast. Seems to be thunderstorms coming up on Thursday.Took the time to loosen my shoe strings today and Ottohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11902027463636062690noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2693729381549736387.post-21849673527432848062013-08-18T19:37:00.001-04:002013-08-18T19:37:53.333-04:00Every inch feels like a smile. :)When ever inch feels like a mile it is time to stop.Today was another scorcher of a day. The bank I walked past on my way home read 86°. When I left the house it was a little overcast. However, it seemed to clear up almost as soon as I left the house. It made for a slow long run.Finished 6 miles before I reached for the water bottle. From there it everything started getting tougher and tougher. It is just when I stop running my calves burn and I can hardly walk. So I guess it's the recovery I don't like.I am on target to hit 100 miles this month. Decided to go back to running farther all week up to my long run. Running the same distance too much and I found that my body was anticipating stopping at that distance. Hopefully I'll be in for a good long run Ottohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11902027463636062690noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2693729381549736387.post-74509724723766762372013-08-11T17:05:00.001-04:002013-08-11T17:05:21.855-04:00Hello. Hello again.I didn't make my goal of 9 miles today. The weather was beautiful. 80 degrees and mostly sunny. Unfortunately that made for a hot run. Even slowing down didn't help. I was just plain weary after 7 miles. Maybe next weekend.Wore my skullcap. Today it did its job and was cool feeling through the whole run. Didn't give me a headache today either.Put on my water belt too. Yes. It FINALLY came. Ugh.
I get annoyed when you purchase something online and there is like a 2-3 week processing period.
Any how the hat I ordered made by Mission Athletecare you can find here, here, or here.
Because I had to wait I really wanted to hate this hat and be so disappointed with it. It was really dark this morning shortly after I left my house to go run on the path at the park in town. That plus the haze from the humidity would have made it dangerous to run on the road. While I hate running laps like a lab rat, safety is a top concern of mine. Why so early? However, if you watched the movie "What about Bob?" then you also know about baby steps. In the movie things seems so far away for Bob. He just couldn't get over whatever because the mountain he needed to overcome was too big. Then he happens on the term baby steps and it is a total break through. It is amazing how much you notice around you if your not constantly monitoring your speed or breathing. Today there were a couple of Amish boys inside the fence at the water treatment plant. However, within the first half mile I was greeted by the smell of Money. It is commonly known as manure to city folk, but around these parts it is the smell of money.
